(Brave) New World, (Bold) New Rules Opening Event

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Valentina Gutchess at AXS Art again for International Women’s History Month.

Curated by Jean Blackwell Font and Valentina Gutchess, the gallery exhibition features artworks from five South Florida women at all stages of practice, from emerging to established. The online exhibition has an additional four artists, showing the works of nine women in all.

We wanted to call it New World, No Rules - something we’ve been saying to our adult children lately. We’ve been encouraging them to think beyond the old norms and craft a life that has meaning for them. The world have been turned upside down and the old rules just don’t meet the demands and expectations of this new world we’re living in today. New World, No Rules (just don’t get arrested!)

However, as we were creating a show for a law firm, we didn’t think the idea of “No Rules” would go over very well. So, with a little more consideration, we devised this title instead.

With a nod to English author and philosopher Aldous Huxley, this exhibition poses the idea that we now live in a new world and we have to develop new rules to create a truly free, more equitable and sustainable world. The core of this exhibition shares work around many ideas, exploring the minds and hearts of women who have lived through a pandemic, making work while figuring out what it means to live in this (Brave) New World.
